How to protect yourself against COVID-19

Cases of Chinese coronavirus infection are registered in 85 countries of the world, including Ukraine. The percentage of recoveries is high, but for some people, the sickness might be very dangerous. How to secure yourself and who is the most vulnerable?

A new virus from China is gradually spreading to other countries: the total number of infected people reached 98 thousand as of the beginning of March. New statistics are regularly updated on Johns Hopkins CSSE website providing the latest info. The recovery dynamics is positive but the danger of epidemics is still there.

Most of the cases have been registered in China (about 80 thousand), South Korea (5,7 thousand) and Iran (3 thousand). In Europe, the total amount of sick people rarely exceeds 200 per country, except for Italy with 3 thousand infected. More than 55 thousand across the globe have recovered after the infection of COVID-19 and the amount of lethal cases reached 3 thousand.

How to prevent sickness

The main preventive measure against panic is getting the important information in time. The risk of infecting may be decreased substantially due to simple hygienic procedures and a couple of rules of how to behave in public places.

  • Wash your hands often and use antibacterial products.

  • Open faucets in public places using a paper towel.

  • Don’t touch your mouth, eyes and nose with unwashed hands.

Using medical face masks during the epidemics will not provide any help or protection against the virus to the healthy people – these products are designed for already infected people, preventing the sickness from the further spreading. People with acute respiratory diseases shall change the mask every three hours.

What to do in case the virus will spread

It’s recommended not to provoke panic: in public places, cough with closing your mouth with a paper tissue or inner side of your elbow. Make sure to throw out the expendable tissue after using it. If you have cold, flu, or acute respiratory disease, stay home and limit your travel necessities. Seek for doctor’s help if you have any symptoms of a virus infection.

In case of the epidemics, avoid public gatherings, keep a couple of meters away from the infected and try not to touch surfaces at the supermarkets, on the markets and in cafes. Meet, seafood, eggs and milk products shall be cooked with a heat processing.

Symptoms and possible complications

Coronavirus is spread by airborne transmission, it has symptoms similar to acute respiratory disease. It could be a simple running nose, unpleasant feeling in the throat, high temperature, chills and cough. Sometimes the sickness leads to nausea and vomiting. In several cases, the virus leads to complications such as heavy pneumonia, acute exacerbation of a chronic diseases in breathing passages – these are life threatening things.

People in the COVID-19 risk zone

Coronavirus has no danger for people with string immunity (in case of the proper treatment and constant medical supervision). Risk zone includes:

  • senior citizens;

  • people with the weakened immune system;

  • people with chronic respiratory diseases.

These population categories shall be especially careful and observe safety precautions to protect themselves from the Chinese COVID-19 coronavirus.
