Prospects and Dangers of Genome Editing: Scientist Oksana Piven to Discuss at Biohacking Conference Kyiv 2020

Biohackers believe that they will manage to overcome many diseases, defeat aging, and prolong life in the future. Genome editing is considered capable of helping them to attain these goals.

What are the peculiarities of CRISPR technology? What potential does it have? The Ukrainian scientist Oksana Piven will highlight these questions at Biohacking Conference Kyiv 2020 on March 26.

The speaker will give a presentation “CRISPR genome editing technology”.

Key points:

  • what CRISPR genome editing technology is;
  • what health opportunities are opened thanks to the use of CRISPR technology;
  • can scientists edit a human genome in Ukraine and is the society ready to use this technology;
  • what challenges may arise in the process of using CRISPR technology and what prospects it has.

Oksana has a Ph.D. degree in biology and is a leading research worker at the department of human genetics of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2009, she won the academic research works contest for young scientists at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Over the last 15 years, the speaker has been studying the functions of three genes that play an essential role in heart performance. Besides, she has been doing research in the human genetics field. Her academic paper focuses on two areas of modern cell biology: reprogramming of cells and the use of CRISPR technology.

Oksana has experience in scientific work abroad. In the USA, she was working at the University of Pennsylvania in the laboratory of Dr. Glenn Radice.

Besides, the scientist gives reports at different scientific events.
